Advocate, Champion, and Drum Major for Equality in Education

Bertha Ellen Johnson was a well-known educator in Delaware. A former Principal of Sliver Lake elementary school. She was a strong advocate of all children receiving equal access to education. Prior to becoming the Principal of Silver Lake Elementary School, she taught in Newark, Townsend and Middletown Public Schools. She also served as Principal of Middletown Elementary School in 1968 which lead to her being appointed to Principal of Silver Lake Elementary in 1975. She retired from Silver Lake in 1985.

Mrs. Johnson was a graduate of the former Delaware State College, now University. She earned a Master’s Degree from the University of Delaware and completed post graduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Delaware. She was also the president of the Delaware School Principals and a member of

the Board of Middletown-Odessa-Townsend Day Care Center.


Outside of her educational pursuits, she was a very active and civic minded person. She was an active member of Trinity AME Church. She served as a member of the American Association of University Women, the Order of Eastern Stars and as a Past President and 2nd State

Director of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated.

She exemplified the standards of a Finer Woman, Educator, Community Activist and Caring individual.


We offer this scholarship to a worthy student, based on the founding Principles of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, which are: Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood and Finer Womanhood; all of which Bertha Johnson upheld in her daily life. She exemplified the standards of a Finer Woman, Educator, Community Activist and Caring individual.

    Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Gamma Alpha Rho Zeta Chapter is seeking college bound, graduating high school seniors for the The Bertha E. Johnson Scholarship award. The purpose of the annual $1,000 scholarship is to assist graduating high school seniors in obtaining a college education and to promote Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc scholarship principles. The scholarship targets under-represented minority students (African-Americans, Latinos, and Native Americans) residing in Southern New Castle County, Delaware. It is particularly aimed at African-American females.

    Eligibility Requirements: 

    • Residency and Schooling:  Must be a graduating high school senior living in or attending a high school in Southern New Castle County, Delaware (New Castle County below the C & D Canal).
    • College Admission: Must be accepted to a college or university offering a four-year degree program.
    • GPA: Minimum cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
    • Community Service: Must demonstrate involvement in community service.
    • Proof of Enrollment: Must provide proof of acceptance and enrollment before funds are disbursed.

    1. Completed Application Form
    2. Official Transcript: Most recent official transcript.
    3. Letters of Recommendation: Two letters are required.
      • One must be from a teacher
      • The second may be from an instructor, employer, school counselor, religious leader, or community leader
    4. Essay: Submit a typed essay (500 words or less) addressing the following question:
      How do you plan to use your education to make a meaningful impact in your community or field?
